GoAbroad innovation award for the Queens in Rio program

The Queens in Rio digital media initiative at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was named the most innovative new program in June 2017 by GoAbroad, an international studies organization.

The program, led by James L. Knight School of Communication faculty Joe Cornelius and Bob Page, engaged 19 students from Queens and six students from Mackenzie Presbyterian University in São Paulo in the creation of digital media stories documenting the impact of the Olympic Games on the residents of Rio de Janeiro.

About 80 percent of Queens undergraduates study abroad, supported by the John Belk International Program, which covers major expenses for most options. The national average for undergraduate study in foreign programs is less than 10 percent.

The Queens in Rio program was supported by Campus Brasil, a foreign study organization based in São Paulo. More information is available on the Queens international studies website and at GoAbroad.
